Newmarket - DPRA of Burlington Ontario has been selected to build and host a pilot web site for internet mapping services to be shared among six pilot Conservation Authorities in Ontario. The pilot, which will run from January 2007 to February 2008, will host Conservation Authorities’ mapping services and is supported by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and its Land Information Ontario initiative.

"The objective of the project is to ultimately enable all or most of Ontario’s 36 Conservation Authorities to increase map based services through lower cost applications-in-common,” said Greg Duffy, Project Manager. “We’re starting with six initial Conservation Authorities, but others will be able to join this program as we go along.”

GeoPortal, the product offered by DPRA will form the core of the application service.

Internet mapping such, as this pilot project, is the most cost effective method for supporting many Conservation Authority needs with GIS based applications.

“We wanted to make sure that we could find an experienced and well respected application developer and service provider who could excite the project steering committee and develop an innovative approach,” said Duffy. DPRA is anticipated to meet the challenges of shared applications and the complexities of merging many disparate data sets within the pilot Conservation Authorities, on time and on budget.

DPRA intends to deliver a product that can meet the needs of conservation data as well as be easily configured by each Authority. The project will focus on the scalable data sharing aspects of the common approach.

Conservation Ontario is looking forward to presenting the pilot concept at its annual A.D. Latornell Conservation Symposium to be held November 15 to 17 at the Nottawasaga Inn in Alliston Ontario.
